Overview

Vue developers build interactive web interfaces with a framework that balances React's flexibility with Angular's batteries-included approach. Vue 3 with the Composition API and TypeScript support has matured into a serious choice for production applications. Nuxt (Vue's meta-framework) handles SSR, static generation, and full-stack development.

Vue is a buyer's market: there are many more developers than open roles.

Retention: 48% of developers who use Vue want to keep using it, and 7% of those who do not use it yet want to start.

What a Vue developer costs

Contract and salary benchmarks for the US.

Contract rate

$81–99/hr

C2C or 1099, from W-2 hourly × 1.3–1.6 for tax, benefits and overhead.

$128,900

BLS median for US software developers ($135,980), adjusted -5% for Vue using Stack Overflow 2025 pay data (439 respondents).

Full-time contractor cost

$168K–$206K

How to hire a Vue developer

What good looks like, and what should worry you.

Typical projects

  • Customer-facing web applications with Nuxt
  • Interactive dashboards and data visualization
  • Component libraries and design systems
  • Progressive enhancement of server-rendered pages
  • Rapid prototypes that evolve into production apps

Team setup

Vue developers are excellent for mid-sized teams (2-5 frontend developers) building product-focused applications. Vue's gentle learning curve means junior developers ramp up faster than with React or Angular. For a full-stack team, Vue + Node.js (or Vue + Python/Laravel) is a productive combination. The Vue talent pool is smaller than React's, so expect to pay a slight premium or consider developers willing to learn Vue from a React background.

What to look for

  • Vue 3 Composition API experience — Options API knowledge alone suggests they haven't kept up
  • TypeScript integration with Vue — script setup with type-safe props, emits, and composables
  • Understands Vue's reactivity system at a conceptual level, not just how to use ref() and reactive()
  • Nuxt experience if your project needs SSR, SEO, or file-based routing
  • Pinia for state management (Vuex is legacy)

Red flags

  • Only knows Vue 2 Options API — Vue 3 is a fundamentally different development experience
  • Can't explain reactive vs ref and when to use each
  • No TypeScript experience — Vue 3 + TypeScript is the standard in production
  • Doesn't use Vite — it's Vue's default build tool and a major part of the ecosystem
  • Can't discuss component design patterns: composables, provide/inject, slots

Interview questions

Questions that separate strong candidates from people who just list the keyword.

  1. Compare the Composition API and Options API. Why did Vue move in this direction?
  2. How do you build a reusable composable? Walk me through extracting shared logic from components.
  3. What's Vue's reactivity system doing under the hood? How does it differ from React's rendering model?
  4. How do you handle server-side rendering with Nuxt? What are the hydration gotchas?
  5. Design a form component system — how do you handle validation, error display, and submission?

Questions

How much does a Vue developer cost?

Contract Vue developers typically bill $81–99/hr (C2C or 1099). The W-2 equivalent salary is about $128,900. Agencies usually charge 2–3× W-2 pay.

Is it hard to hire Vue developers?

Vue is rated Low on our hiring difficulty index (24/100, #25 of 29), with about 3 open US roles for every 1,000 developers who use it.

Should I hire a full-time Vue developer or use a contractor?

If the work is ongoing and core to your product, hire. If you need to start quickly, cover a gap, or the role is hard to fill, a contractor or agency gets work moving while you search.
