Overview

Ruby developers build web applications, APIs, and backend services — predominantly with Ruby on Rails. Rails remains one of the fastest frameworks for shipping features, with conventions that eliminate boilerplate and a mature ecosystem of gems for common needs. Ruby developers are often strong generalists who can handle full-stack work from database to deployment.

Hiring Ruby developers is competitive. The talent pool is large but so is demand, so senior people get snapped up quickly.

Retention: 44% of developers who use Ruby want to keep using it, and 2% of those who do not use it yet want to start.

What a Ruby developer costs

Contract and salary benchmarks for the US.

Contract rate

$96–118/hr

C2C or 1099, from W-2 hourly × 1.3–1.6 for tax, benefits and overhead.

W-2 equivalent

$153,500

BLS median for US software developers ($135,980), adjusted +13% for Ruby using Stack Overflow 2025 pay data (386 respondents).

Full-time contractor cost

$200K–$245K

How to hire a Ruby developer

What good looks like, and what should worry you.

Typical projects

  • Full-stack web applications with Ruby on Rails
  • API-only backends serving mobile or SPA frontends
  • E-commerce platforms (Shopify apps, Spree/Solidus)
  • Rapid MVP and prototype development
  • Legacy Rails application maintenance and upgrades

Team setup

Ruby developers are some of the most productive hires for web applications. A single senior Rails developer can build and ship features as fast as a 2-3 person team in other stacks. For larger Rails applications, a team of 3-5 Rails developers with one senior lead is a proven pattern. If you're considering Rails vs other frameworks, it's best for content-heavy applications, SaaS products, and marketplaces where speed of feature development matters more than raw performance.

What to look for

  • Deep Rails knowledge: ActiveRecord patterns, Action Cable, Hotwire/Turbo for modern Rails
  • Can write clean Ruby beyond Rails — understands metaprogramming, blocks, procs, and the object model
  • Testing discipline: RSpec or Minitest, factory-based test data, integration testing
  • Experience with Rails performance: N+1 queries, caching strategies, background jobs (Sidekiq)
  • Understands the Rails upgrade path if you're on an older version

Red flags

  • Only knows Rails, not Ruby — can't write a script or gem outside the framework
  • No testing habit — Rails makes testing easy, so no tests is a deliberate choice
  • Doesn't understand ActiveRecord performance implications (eager loading, query optimization)
  • Can't discuss deployment: Puma configuration, connection pooling, memory management
  • Treats Rails as the only option — sometimes Sinatra or Hanami is the right choice

Interview questions

Questions that separate strong candidates from people who just list the keyword.

  1. How do you handle N+1 queries in Rails? Walk me through detection and prevention strategies.
  2. Explain the Rails asset pipeline vs modern alternatives (import maps, jsbundling, cssbundling). What would you choose for a new project?
  3. How do you approach background job design? What goes in a job vs what stays in the request cycle?
  4. Walk me through how you'd upgrade a Rails 5 app to Rails 7. What's your process?
  5. Design a multi-tenant SaaS application in Rails. How do you handle data isolation?

Questions

How much does a Ruby developer cost?

Contract Ruby developers typically bill $96–118/hr (C2C or 1099). The W-2 equivalent salary is about $153,500. Agencies usually charge 2–3× W-2 pay.

Is it hard to hire Ruby developers?

Ruby is rated High on our hiring difficulty index (60/100, #14 of 29), with about 16 open US roles for every 1,000 developers who use it.

Should I hire a full-time Ruby developer or use a contractor?

If the work is ongoing and core to your product, hire. If you need to start quickly, cover a gap, or the role is hard to fill, a contractor or agency gets work moving while you search.
